"Ānanda! If monks, nuns, upāsakas, upāsikās, the eight classes of devas and nāgas, or any sentient beings recite the Mahāyāna sūtras, cultivate the Mahāyāna, give rise to the Mahāyāna intention, delight in seeing the form body of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, delight in seeing the stūpa of Prabhūtaratna Buddha, delight in seeing Śākyamuni Buddha and the emanation Buddhas, or delight in attaining the purification of the six sense faculties, they should train in this contemplation. The merit of this contemplation removes all obstacles and enables one to see the supreme and wondrous form. Even without entering samādhi, merely by chanting and upholding [the sūtra], cultivating it with focused mind, continuous from thought to thought without departing from the Mahāyāna, one will see Samantabhadra in from one day to three weeks (twenty-one days). Those with heavier obstacles will see him after forty-nine days; those with still heavier obstacles will see him in one lifetime; those with yet heavier obstacles will see him in two lifetimes; and those with yet heavier obstacles will see him in three lifetimes. Thus, because their karmic retributions differ, different accounts are given.
