1.10

經曰目連悲哀者　述曰。此痛苦也。哀哉父母愛育劬勞一旦永摧。說論惡道。目連雖不滅姓痛徹心肝。悲涕橫流。哀聲動地。故云悲哀也。

[The sūtra says:] "Maudgalyāyana was grieved and sorrowful." / The commentary says: This is grieving. How lamentable! The toil of the parents who lovingly raised him was once and forever brought to ruin, cast down into an evil destiny. Although Maudgalyāyana had not forfeited his [spiritual] nature, the pain pierced his heart and liver, his tears flowed profusely, and his cries of grief shook the earth. Hence it says, "he was grieved and sorrowful."
