[The sūtra says:] "Maudgalyāyana cried out loudly in sorrow and wept, hurried back, and reported to the Buddha, detailing everything in this manner." / The commentary says: The above explained the section on the causes and conditions for the arising of the teaching; this now explains the section on that which is spoken by the holy teaching. First is Maudgalyāyana's petition, and second is the Tathāgata's response. This is the petition. Having attained the fruits of the six supernormal knowledges, Maudgalyāyana could transform at will; although he had the power to overturn heaven and shake the earth, and the speed of lightning and shooting stars, he could not bestow fragrant rice into a flaming mouth, nor extinguish the blazing fire within her hands. This shows that saving her alone was impossible, yet he still yearned to repay her; therefore, he wept aloud in sorrow and further requested a means of rescue, hurrying back to report to the Buddha. His loud cries and mournful wailing were heart-wrenching, their sound shaking the gods and spirits; hence it says, "cried out loudly." In "in sorrow and wept," and so forth: his feelings were bitter as he wiped away tears, which is called sorrow; choking and suppressing his voice, it is said that he wept. Beholding his mother's extreme suffering, he returned precipitously without delay; hence it says, "hurried back and reported to the Buddha."
