[When] the sūtra states, 'Entreating and wishing that the present parents,' and so forth: The commentary says: This teaches the making of vows. One should vow that the lives of parents in their declining years will not be exhausted, and that the provisions for their bodies will ever be peaceful and easy. Having departed from the toil of broken limbs, they will remain in the tranquility of reliant joy. May the revered spirits of seven generations bid a perpetual farewell to the hundred sufferings, depart forever from the thousands of cold springs, and on this morning return to heavenly spirits, on this very day being affected by this vehicle of merit, with vows that are likewise boundless. This is teaching them to present offerings.
