[The sūtra says:] "He saw that his deceased mother was born among the hungry ghosts, seeing neither drink nor food, with her skin and bones clinging together." / The commentary says: This is the second, catching sight. Maudgalyāyana exerted his supernormal power, vertically illuminating the three realms and horizontally shining upon the ten directions; after his search was complete, he distinctly saw her. Since her soul was in this destiny, the suffering she underwent was beyond words. "Seeing neither drink nor food," and so forth, explains his seeing the direct retribution. Food and drink nourish the physical body, making the skin full and clean; since internal sustenance was completely cut off, there were only skin and bones clinging to her form.
