Ninth precept: On encouraging two householders to increase the price of a robe. The purpose of the formulation and the conditions for the offense are no different from the preceding, except that the cooperation of two householders constitutes the distinction. Question: Urging an increase of a single thread immediately constitutes an offense; why is it that in begging for robes, an offense is committed only upon obtaining one strip [of cloth]? Answer: When begging, the other person originally had no intention, and when one begs, it is left to them to deliberate. The sense of annoyance is slight, so an offense is committed only upon [obtaining] a full strip. In the case of setting aside [a price], the donor already had an open mind to give and the limit was fixed; failing to appreciate their kindness, disdaining it as too little, and demanding more causes deep annoyance to the other person's feelings; hence an offense is committed even for a single thread. Below, the text of the precept is properly explained.
