Tenth precept: On excessively and urgently demanding the price of a robe. 1. Purpose of the formulation: Precious materials are valued by worldly sentiment; they increase greed, obstruct the Path, and give rise to deep troubles. They are not suitable to be kept by a bhikṣu. Now, a donor out of faithful conviction makes an offering as the price of a robe; fearing the offense of keeping precious items, it is not appropriate to accept it oneself, so it is entrusted to a layperson to procure allowable goods. If one pursues and demands it urgently, leaving no room for leisure, pressing and harrying them, this excessively annoys the other party. Therefore, the restriction of three demands and six silent standings was established. Now, excessively demanding and annoying the person constitutes an offense. There are five specific conditions: 1. The donor sends the precious items; 2. It is for purchasing a robe for use; 3. It is entrusted to that allowable person to turn into robe materials; 4. One demands it exceeding the limit; 5. Obtaining the robe immediately constitutes an offense. Below, the text of the precept is properly explained. This precept was formulated on account of Upananda.
