“If a monk engages in various kinds of buying and selling, it is a niḥsargika-prāyaścittika.” In this full text of the precept, there are three clauses: first, the offender; second, trading with each other; third, establishing the offense. The first clause can be understood. Regarding “engages in various kinds of buying and selling,” this explains the second clause. The Vinaya states: “Whether worked gold, unworked gold, or worked and unworked gold—these three kinds are traded with each other. Silver also has three kinds; coin has only one kind. These seven kinds are traded with one another.” As for “coin,” there are eight kinds: gold, silver, copper, iron, pewter, lead, tin, wooden coins, and hujiāo—these eight kinds of coins are all called coin. Regarding “it is a niḥsargika-prāyaścittika,” this is the offense clause; the characteristics of the offense are the same as in the preceding precept on taking treasure. As for no offense, the Vinaya says: “If one trades coin for sets of necklaces, or exchanges coin for coin, for the sake of the Three Jewels, there is no offense.”
