Precept 59: Taking [a Robe] Given in Genuine Permissible Bestowal Without Asking the Owner. The underlying reason for instituting it: The procedure of permissible bestowal is generally meant to eliminate possessive attachment, keeping one far along the great practice. Since the matter has already been entrusted to the other person, when taking and using it, one must inquire first; taking it arbitrarily goes against the holy teaching in principle. Moreover, since the other person has not seen the object, they may think it has been lost or taken away, causing them no slight distress. Therefore, the sacred institution was made. Explaining the title: Giving it away to the other person without falsehood is called "genuine" (shí). That this object does not damage the mind with defilement is called "permissible bestowal" (jìngshī). Hence it is called the precept against taking without asking what has been given in genuine permissible bestowal.
