Precept 48: Watching an Army in Array. The intention of the institution: an army in array is perilous, with weapons clashing in conflict. In reality, it brings ruin; in an instant of amusement, it causes the mind to become dissipated and unrestrained, inviting criticism and damaging the path. The wrongdoing is deep and the fault is extreme, completely running counter to compassion; therefore, watching it is not permitted. There are four specific conditions: first, it is an army in array; second, intentionally going to watch; third, there are no extenuating circumstances—meaning that if one is invited, or encounters an army, or comes upon hazards such as water, land, or perilous dangers, there is no offense; fourth, going and seeing constitutes an offense. The text of the precept is clearly set forth below. This precept was instituted by the Buddha because the group of six monks watched the army in array, and Prasenajit saw them from afar and was extremely displeased.
