The seventh precept: Building a hut that has an owner without assignment by the Saṃgha. Because it has an owner, the cubit dimensions are not distinguished. This differs from the previous precept; the remaining details are largely the same. There are six specific conditions: 1. Having an owner. 2. Building it for oneself. 3. A hut of six spans in length and four spans [in breadth] or more. 4. [Lack of assignment]. 5. The perception of it not being assigned. 6. The hut is completed. Below, the Prātimokṣa text is properly set forth. This precept was laid down because the monk Channa built a hut and cut down a sacred tree in an open space; laypeople reproached him, the monks reported the fault, and the Buddha thereupon laid down the precept.
