Precept 11: Disobeying an Admonition for Supporting a Schism / 1. The intention behind the prescription: As before, when the Saṅgha performed the formal act to admonish Devadatta, four companions acted as echoing supporters to assist in bringing about the schism. The Saṅgha subsequently admonished them, but they obstinately refused to accept it. Hence it is called the precept against disobeying an admonition for supporting a schism. / The specific conditions are six: 1. Devadatta undertakes the matter of causing a schism in the Saṅgha; 2. the Saṅgha carries out the admonition according to the Dharma; 3. [these monks] obstruct the Saṅgha from carrying out the admonition, assisting in bringing about the schism; 4. the Saṅgha according to the Dharma admonishes these echoing supporters; 5. they refuse and do not comply; 6. upon the completion of the karmavācanā, the offense is incurred. / The four deficient conditions can be known by comparison. Below, the prātimokṣa text is directly explained. This precept was laid down because Devadatta obstinately clung to the five dharmas, and when the Saṅgha admonished him, the accomplice monks assisted in the schism and opposed the admonishing Saṅgha; the Buddha laid down the precept on this account.
