"The undetermined precept regarding a secluded place": 1. The intent of its establishment: The Sarvāstivāda-vinaya-vibhāṣā states that, first, it is to stop slander; second, it is to eliminate disputes; third, it is to enhance the Buddha-Dharma. The principle of going forth requires one's steps to be completely cut off from worldly defilement, so that one is revered by humans and devas, transforming sentient beings through the path; yet speaking improper speech with a woman in a secluded place transgresses the Buddha's intent above and loses the reverence of devas below. Fourth, it is to cut off bad dharmas that obstruct the path in proper sequence. 2. Explanation of the name: When a trustworthy [woman] arrives at the Saṃgha, before it is determined and distinguished, the Saṃgha also cannot definitively conclude his offense; hence it is called "undetermined." 3. Possession of conditions: There are five specific conditions: 1. A secluded place; 2. A human woman; 3. No third person present; 4. Speaking improper words in any of the four postures, without seeing or finding actual facts; 5. A trustworthy woman informs the Saṃgha, but the matter has not been settled. Possessing these five, it falls under the investigation and penalty of an undetermined offense. 4. Deficient conditions: These can be understood by analogy with the previous explanations.
