Eighth precept: On encouraging and praising a householder to increase the price of a robe. 1. Purpose of the formulation: A faithful householder sets his mind [on an offering] and establishes a fixed limit for the price. It is proper to accept in accordance with the offering without violating the rules of the Path. Now, conversely disdaining it as too little and demanding more beyond the limit, one increases one's own greedy desires and ruins their faith and reverence. Therefore, the Sage formulated this rule. There are six specific conditions: 1. An unrelated householder sets aside the price of a robe with an open mind; 2. An intended limit has been established; 3. One knows that the intention to donate is limited; 4. Disdaining it as too little, one encourages them to increase it; 5. They increase the price or the threads on one's account; 6. Taking receipt of it immediately constitutes an offense. The specific conditions that are absent can be known. Below, the text of the precept is properly explained. This precept was formulated by the Buddha because Upananda committed a fault.
