The eighteenth precept: Bartering treasure. Regarding the intention behind the prohibition: Because treasure is bartered among one another to seek interest and gain, increasing greed and obstructing the Path, and incurring the fault of worldly censure, the holy prohibition was therefore established. The particular conditions are five: 1. it is a treasure item; 2. trading with each other; 3. fixing a price; 4. for oneself; 5. receiving it immediately constitutes an offense. Below, the text of the precept is properly explained. This precept arose from an infraction by the monk Upananda, who went to the market with money. Laypeople criticized him, and the Buddha established the precept.
