Precept 23: Begging for thread and causing an unrelated person to weave it. Intent of the formulation: With the three robes complete, one can sustain the body. Now, however, personally begging for thread and relying on the influence of the powerful, one forces a weaver to weave the three robes. This increases greed and abundant desire, harms and troubles the weaver, and contrarily invites ridicule and slander. Therefore the Sage formulated the rule. The specific conditions are four: 1. personally begging for thread; 2. the weaver is an unrelated layperson; 3. using influence to send [thread] to be woven without paying the cost; 4. completing [the weaving], whereupon the offense is committed. Below, the prātimokṣa text is properly clarified. This prātimokṣa rule arose from the misconduct of Upananda, for which the Buddha formulated the precept.
