The fourth precept: on praising oneself to a woman to solicit offerings. Speaking with much artfulness to praise one's own goodness, seducing her affection, and speaking of lustful matters in order to indulge oneself; hence it is called the precept on praising oneself to solicit offerings. The specific conditions are seven: 1. A human woman. 2. Perceiving her to be a human woman. 3. A defiled mind. 4. Praising oneself and speaking coarse and evil words. 5. Perceiving them as coarse and evil words. 6. The words being fully distinct. 7. The woman understanding. Incomplete conditions for this precept are explained according to the touching precept. Below, the Prātimokṣa text itself is properly clarified. This precept arose because Udāyin, hearing that the Buddha had already laid down the preceding three precepts, thereupon praised himself to a woman to solicit offerings. A bhikṣu brought up the fault, and the Buddha then laid down the precept.
