Precept Thirty: Diverting Saṃgha Property to Oneself. / Purpose of instituting [the precept]: A person who has left home in principle should honor having few desires and knowing contentment. Yet, having heard another householder promise that they wish to give to the saṃgha, he expediently persuades them to divert it so that it comes to himself. Internally this fosters the fetter of greed, externally it troubles the donor, and moreover it harms the saṃgha; this is extremely inappropriate. Therefore the Sage instituted it. / There are four specific conditions: first, it is property promised to the saṃgha; second, one has the notion that it was promised; third, one diverts it to oneself; fourth, upon receiving it, one commits the offense. / Hereafter the Prātimokṣa text is directly clarified. This precept arose because Upananda committed a fault, and the Buddha instituted the precept on his account.
