Third: Seasonable robes (kāla-cīvara). This was instituted because the ṣaḍvargika monks were greedy and insatiable. Robes obtained during the time of the kathina robe are called 'seasonable robes'. Keeping extra seasonable robes incurs no offense. When the kathina robe has ended, they are called 'unseasonable robes' (akāla-cīvara). Accepting items with one's own hands indicates they are not impure items such as gold or silver. If a robe accepted and held is damaged, if the tear can accommodate a kitten's paw, the privilege is lost, and it should be quickly patched. If it is mended and taken up again, it is not subject to forfeiture; one commits only a duṣkṛta. If it is mended on the same day and does not extend to many days, there is no need to re-resolve upon it immediately. The same applies if the thread along the border is torn. 'If the undetermined kathina robe is finished': If the three robes are sufficient, one may also keep extra wealth for ten days. If the three robes are not complete and one obtains various colors, each insufficient to make a robe, one is permitted to keep them for one month. After one month, they should be joined together to make a robe of different colors. If after joining them it is still insufficient, one is permitted to seek more to make it complete; when complete, make it immediately, with no fixed limit. If one kind of monochrome cloth is insufficient, when seeking to make it complete, make it immediately, not exceeding one month. If one intentionally does not seek it, it is a duṣkṛta; this is not limited by days and months. If one knows of another place where it can be obtained to patch it, knowing of a great gathering or that a relative's household should provide more, in order to wait for it to patch and join it to completion, one may keep it for one month without vikalpanā. Any remaining cloth not used for making robes is treated as ordinary vikalpanā robes. The minimal size is two and a half cubits for the three robes. If the saṃkakṣikā measures like an antarvāsaka, it can be accepted and regarded as one of the three robes according to the minimal measurement.
