Eleventh: Making a spread of kauśeya. Kauśeya is silk floss. A spread is a mattress spread upon the ground in a room. Monks in the country of Kauśāmbī took silk floss to make mattresses: first, because floss is expensive; second, because it harms many silkworms. The four assemblies criticized and disparaged them. On this account, the precept was formulated: because it harms living beings and lacks compassion; because it is difficult to maintain and hinders one's practice; and because it is extravagant, expensive, and unlawful. If someone else makes it for him, or if it is tattered and old, he is permitted to receive and use it.
