Sixteenth: Obtaining sheep's wool while travelling on a road. A merchant was travelling far and carrying much sheep's wool. His cart broke down and his oxen fell ill, leaving no way to transport it; the road had many thieves and his companions' carts were all heavy. He wished to give it to them, but they were unwilling to accept. It happened that a monk came from behind; the merchant was overjoyed and forthwith offered it to him. Thereupon the monk carried the heavy burden, following them to the next village. The merchant company resented it, saying to the monk, "Are you a merchant, travelling this far?" On this account, the precept was formulated, no longer permitting taking it. Later, various householders wished to offer sheep's wool, but the monks would not accept it, and the householders greatly resented it. On this account, it was opened again. Being opened, the limit is not to exceed: if one personally carries it beyond three yojanas, it is a niḥsargika-pāyattika. If one shares it with another, the other is also limited to three yojanas; if not sharing, it is also like this. Making another carry it beyond three yojanas is a duṣkṛta. Floss is the same as sheep's wool; all the rest are different. In general, when a monk carries a load, he must not pass through a village; passing through a village is a duṣkṛta.
