Thirty-seven: Eating at an improper time. The Śākya youths of the group of seventeen were handsome and dignified in appearance, respected and loved by people. When laypeople saw them, they called out to give them liquor and food. They then ate and drank at improper times, indulging themselves to full intoxication. After becoming intoxicated and merry, they clapped their hands and sang for amusement. For this reason, [the Buddha] did not allow eating at an improper time. From midday until daybreak is called the improper time. If during the improper time one conceives it to be the improper time, or during the improper time one conceives it to be the proper time, or during the improper time one has doubt, those who eat all commit an offense of pāyattika. If during the proper time one conceives it to be the improper time, or during the proper time one has doubt, those who eat incur a duṣkṛta. If during the proper time one conceives it to be the proper time, there is no offense.
