[Rule] Twenty-five: Arranging with a nun to board a boat together, going up or down a river, except to cross straight over. The ṣaḍvargika monks and the nuns who supported Devadatta boarded a boat together, flirting and engaging in improper behavior; the laity criticized them. For this reason, it was prohibited. Later, wishing to traverse a perilous route, monks were on a boat, and nuns wished to take passage; because the precept had been formulated, the monks did not permit it. The monks were safe, but the nuns were subsequently robbed by bandits. For this reason, an exception was again opened. If one has previously arranged to board a boat together going up or down a river, it is a pāyattika. If one arranges to board a boat together going up or down a river from one village to another village, it is a pāyattika; returning halfway is a duṣkṛta. For one monk and many nuns, each monk commits many pāyattikas; for one monk and [one nun], there is one pāyattika; for many monks and two nuns, each monk also commits one pāyattika. If going toward an open expanse for five hundred bow-lengths, it is a pāyattika; returning halfway is a duṣkṛta. If not arranged, or if crossing straight over, there is no offense. If blown off course by wind or drift logs so that the crossing is lost, if the bank ahead collapses, or if oars and gear are lost, going up or down [the river] is entirely without offense.
