Third, explaining the discernment of dharmas (dharma-pravicaya) has four parts: 1. general question; 2. brief answer; 3. listing the names; 4. explanation, which has two parts: (1) clarifying the discernment of sūtra meaning, which has two parts: [a] statement; [b] pointing to the subject matter; (2) clarifying the discernment of gāthā meaning, which has three parts: [a] general statement; [b] listing the names; [c] detailed explanation, which has three parts: [i] explaining gāthās of ultimate meaning (paramārtha-gāthā); [ii] explaining gāthās of intentional meaning (abhiprāyika-gāthā); [iii] explaining gāthās of substantial meaning (vastu-gāthā).
