Fifth, explaining the meaning of the applications of mindfulness has two [parts]: first, general questioning; second, detailed answering, which has two different approaches. The first approach explains the meaning of the applications of mindfulness based on three factors—the focal object, the intrinsic nature, and so forth—and has two [parts]: first, a brief answer; second, distinct explanations, which has three [parts]: 1. explaining the meaning of the applications of mindfulness based on the focal object, which has two [parts]: (1) stating it, (2) explaining it; 2. explaining the meaning of the applications of mindfulness based on the intrinsic nature, which has two [parts]: (1) stating it, (2) explaining it; 3. explaining miscellaneous applications of mindfulness. The second approach explains the meaning of the applications of mindfulness based on the two paths and has two [parts]: first, a brief explanation; second, a detailed exposition, which has three [parts]: 1. stating it; 2. listing the names, which has three [parts] as in the treatise; 3. distinct explanations, which has two [parts]: (1) explaining the contaminated path based on wisdom arisen from hearing and reflection, (2) explaining the contaminated and uncontaminated paths based on wisdom arisen from cultivation.
