The second formulation, explaining one-pointedness of mind in terms of the two factors of calming (śamatha) and discernment (vipaśyanā), has two parts: 1. brief explanation, with two parts: (1) statement, (2) explanation, with two parts: a. explaining the category of calming, b. explaining the category of discernment; 2. detailed explanation, with three parts: (1) explaining the category of calming in terms of the nine mental abidings, (2) explaining the category of discernment in terms of the four types of intellectual activity, (3) general summary.
