Within the fourth [part], the detailed explanation in five [sections], the fifth, explaining the station of cultivating mental application (manaskāra-bhāvanā), has six [parts]: 1. explaining the four kinds of mental application and the marks of their results; 2. explaining the marks of a spiritual friend (kalyāṇamitra) instructing a practitioner of preliminary mental application; 3. explaining the marks of instructing in the five contemplations of the foul and so forth; 4. explaining the sūtra phrases; 5. explaining the benefits; and 6. explaining the marks of preliminary mental application.
