Second, explaining the marks of a spiritual friend instructing a practitioner of preliminary mental application has four [parts]: 1. general questioning; 2. brief answering in two [parts]: (1) marking out, and (2) explaining; 3. enumerating the terms in five [parts] as in the treatise; 4. separate explanation in two [parts]: (1) general questioning; (2) extensive answering in five [parts]: a. answering regarding the marks of cultivating revulsion in three [parts] as in the treatise; b. answering regarding the marks of cultivating delight in three [parts]: (a) general marking out, (b) detailed explanation in seven [parts] as in the treatise, and (c) general conclusion; c. answering regarding the marks of contemplating faults in six [parts]: (a) general marking out, (b) enumerating the terms, (c) explaining the essential marks, (d) explaining particular faults, (e) showing [...] faults, and (f) explaining the station of calming the mind; d. answering regarding the marks of cultivating illumination in two [parts]: (a) general marking out, and (b) separate explanation in four [parts] as in the treatise; and e. answering regarding discerning affairs in seven [parts] as in the treatise.
