Within the explanation of the sixteen aspects of the four truths (catuḥsatya) of the desire realm divided into five, the second is explaining the observation of the four aspects of the truth of origin (samudayasatya), having three [sections]: 1. explaining the arising; 2. establishing the correct meaning; 3. general conclusion. The correct meaning has three different approaches: The first approach explains the aspects of origin relying on four factors—craving being able to lead to suffering, and so forth—having four [subsections]: (1) explaining the meaning of the aspect of cause, having two [parts]: a. establishing the cause, b. showing the effect; (2) explaining the meaning of the aspect of origin, having two [parts]: a. establishing the cause, b. showing the effect; (3) explaining the meaning of the aspect of arising, having two [parts]: a. establishing the cause, b. showing the effect; (4) explaining the meaning of the aspect of condition, having two [parts]: a. establishing the cause, b. showing the effect. The second approach explains the aspects of origin relying on four factors such as grasping as cause, having three [subsections]: (1) general statement; (2) specific explanations, which has four [parts]: a. explaining the meaning of the aspect of cause relying on craving, b. explaining the meaning of the aspect of origin relying on grasping, c. explaining the meaning of the aspect of arising relying on the chief factor, d. explaining the meaning of the aspect of condition relying on birth; (3) third, general conclusion. The third approach explains the aspects of origin relying on the latent defilements (anuśaya) and so forth, having two [subsections]: (1) general statement; (2) specific explanations, which has two [parts]: a. explaining the meaning of the aspect of cause relying on the seeds of the latent defilements, b. combined explanation of the three meanings of origin, arising, and condition, which has two [points]: (a) general statement, (b) specific explanations, having three [subpoints]: i. relying on craving for future existence to explain the aspect of origin, ii. relying on craving conjoined with delight and passion to explain the aspect of arising and condition, iii. relying on craving of delight to explain the meaning of the aspect of condition; 3. explaining the general conclusion of the four aspects, having three [subsections]: (1) establishing the cause, (2) showing the effect, (3) conclusion.
