First, broadly distinguishing the essential characteristics of the four immeasurables has four [parts]: 1. general question; 2. brief answer; 3. listing the names, which has three [parts], as in the treatise; 4. specific explanation, which has three [parts]: (1) explaining the essential characteristics of the three kinds of contemplation of loving-kindness has three [parts]: [a] explaining the contemplation of loving-kindness focused on sentient beings has three [parts]: [i] establishing the cognitive object, which has three [parts], as in the treatise, [ii] establishing the cognizing [mind], which has two [parts]: establishing the cause, and demonstrating the result, [iii] conclusion; [b] explaining the characteristics of the contemplation of loving-kindness focused on phenomena has three [parts]: [i] establishing the cognitive object, [ii] establishing the cognizing [mind], [iii] conclusion; [c] explaining the characteristics of the objectless contemplation of loving-kindness has three [parts]: [i] establishing the cognitive object, [ii] establishing the cognizing [mind], [iii] conclusion; (2) analogously explaining the distinctive characteristics of the three contemplations of compassion and so forth; (3) explaining the essential characteristics of the three factors of compassion and so forth has three [parts]: [a] explaining the essence of compassion has three [parts]: establishing the cause, demonstrating the result, and conclusion; [b] explaining the essence of sympathetic joy has three [parts]: establishing the cause, demonstrating the result, and conclusion; [c] explaining the essence of equanimity has three [parts]: establishing the cause, demonstrating the result, and conclusion.
