Treatise: As the World-Honoured One said: “All dharmas are without self.” What are all dharmas? What is meant by “without self”?
Commentary: Above, the title was explained; below, the meaning of the text is explained. In this there are two parts: first, citing the sūtra to raise the question; second, explaining according to the question. This is the first. “World-Honoured One” (bhagavat) is the master who established the teaching. Summing up the preceding nine titles, fully containing the distinctions of the three virtues and six meanings, he is therefore named the World-Honoured One. Having fully possessed all virtues, he is revered by living beings, and therefore what he says is truly a valid standard (pramāṇa). Thus, relying on what he said, the premise of the treatise is established. In saying “all dharmas are without self”: what are called the substantial entities of all dharmas? And why are these dharmas also called “without self”? It does not mean inquiring about a selflessness distinct from the dharmas.
