"Associated ignorance shares the delusion with the nine, while unshared ignorance is directly deluded," and so forth: "lack of wisdom" refers to ignorance. However, ignorance generally has two kinds: first, associated, which occurs alongside the various delusions in all six consciousnesses; second, unshared, which does not occur alongside the various delusions in the various consciousnesses. Yet this unshared [ignorance] again has two kinds: first, constantly active, which is only in the manas; second, uniquely active, which is only in the mental consciousness. Yet this uniquely active [ignorance] also has two kinds: first, sovereign, which does not accompany greed and so forth, being exclusively deluded about the principle; second, non-sovereign, which does not accompany greed and so forth, but accompanies wrath and so forth. Here, since associated [ignorance] accompanies the various delusions, it follows the various delusions in being directly or indirectly deluded about the truths: if associated with a directly deluded delusion, it is directly deluded about the truths; if associated with an indirectly deluded delusion, it is indirectly deluded about the truths. The unshared ignorance spoken of here is that which is sovereign among the uniquely active: it is severed only by seeing, and is directly deluded about the principle of the truths, because non-sovereign uniquely active [ignorance] is severed also by cultivation.
