昧簡在定略別寤時等者。昧謂闇劣。簡異在定極明了心。略謂疎略。簡別寤時遍緣境心。簡別定瞻故言昧略。

"Obscure excludes being in meditative concentration; brief distinguishes it from when awake," and so forth: "obscure" means dark and weak, excluding the extremely lucid mind in concentration. "Brief" means coarse and abbreviated, distinguishing it from the mind when awake which takes objects comprehensively as its objective support. Because it excludes meditative concentration and waking, it is said to be "obscure and brief."
