"Because, like the other hindrances and entanglements, it is associated with the mind": this establishes a syllogism (anumāna) to reveal that it exists substantially. 'Hindrances' refers to the five hindrances: first, sensual desire; second, ill will; third, torpor and sleep; fourth, restlessness and remorse; fifth, doubt. 'Entanglements' refers to the eight entanglements: first, torpor; second, sleep; third, restlessness; fourth, remorse; fifth, jealousy; sixth, stinginess; seventh, shamelessness; eighth, unconscionableness. There are two syllogisms here. The first states: 'These hindrances and entanglements are definitely associated with the mind; because they are hindrances and entanglements; like the other hindrances and entanglements.' The second syllogism states: 'Now, this sleep is not devoid of substantial entity and function; because it is associated with the mind; like the other hindrances and entanglements.' Corroborating their establishment follows the same pattern, as should be understood in accordance with reason.
