於意言境不深推度等者。唯識疏中雖有兩說。今就一義。思慧二法於境麁轉不深推度即名為尋。於境細轉深推度時即名為伺。故離思慧無別自性。

"Not deeply deliberating upon objects designated by the mind, etc.": although there are two explanations in the commentary on the *Vijñaptimātratā*, here we rely on one meaning: when the two dharmas of volition (cetanā) and discernment (prajñā) operate coarsely toward an object and do not deliberate deeply, this is called 'investigation' (vitarka); when they operate subtly toward an object and deliberate deeply, this is called 'analysis' (vicāra). Therefore, apart from volition and discernment, there is no separate intrinsic nature.
