Regarding "these tactile objects also have twenty-two distinct designations, etc.": these marks of tangible objects are established on the basis of eight causes. The one kind, roughness, is established on the basis of friction. The one kind, smoothness, is established on the basis of appearance. The two kinds, lightness and heaviness, are established on the basis of weighing. The two kinds, slowness and urgency, are established on the basis of grasping. The two kinds, cold and warmth, are established on the basis of touch. Stickiness, itching, stiffness, and weakness are established on the basis of mixture: because earth and water are mixed, there is stickiness; because wind and fire are mixed, there is itching; because earth and wind are mixed, there is stiffness; because water and fire are mixed, there is weakness. On the basis of the equilibrium of elements, vigor and repose are established: when the four great elements are in equilibrium, being without fear, there is vigor; being in balanced harmony and without disturbance, there is repose. On the basis of the non-equilibrium of elements, the remaining tangible objects are established: because wind and fire increase, there is hunger; because earth and fire increase, there is thirst; because earth and water increase, there is repletion; because wind and fire increase, there is stifling distress. Illness, aging, death, and so forth are all caused by the increase of the great elements, because there is an accompanying increase; because of this accompanying increase, it is called non-equilibrium. Because these marks are felt by the body, they are all called tangible objects.
