Regarding "what is called aging is precisely the meaning of alteration, etc.": Question: The four marks explained in the treatises are arising, abiding, alteration, and cessation; why are the names and sequence here different from those in the treatises? Answer: What is sought in the three pitakas differs in each case: Sūtras seek through sequence, and one should seek the sequence of words and meanings. Vinaya seeks through conditions, seeking what conditions led to the formulation of these precepts. Abhidharma seeks through nature and marks, merely seeking the true nature and marks of all dharmas. Therefore, the texts and meanings explained in these treatises merely reveal the nature and marks without relying on sequence. Since the authors' intentions differ, there is no contradiction.
