1.66

如正斷等雖無前相等者。四正斷者。一者已生惡不善法由正懃力斷之令滅。二者未生惡不善法由正懃力令不得生起。三者未生諸勝善法由正懃力修之令生。四者已生諸勝善法由正懃力修令增長。此四正懃雖無前相。說四次第相。但約言說而為次第。

Regarding 'Like the correct abandonments and so forth, although they lack prior and posterior characteristics', and so forth: as for the four correct abandonments: first, through the power of correct exertion, to abandon and extinguish unwholesome, evil dharmas that have already arisen; second, through the power of correct exertion, to prevent unwholesome, evil dharmas that have not yet arisen from arising; third, through the power of correct exertion, to cultivate and bring about superior wholesome dharmas that have not yet arisen; fourth, through the power of correct exertion, to cultivate and increase superior wholesome dharmas that have already arisen. Although these four correct exertions lack prior and posterior characteristics, the four are spoken of with sequential characteristics purely with reference to conventional discourse as a sequence.
