[Treatise:] Fourth is the condition-perfuming... manifesting in accordance with their thoughts.
[Commentary:] This is the fourth [meaning].
“The condition-perfuming mirror” gives its name. Because the greatness of function perfumes externally, it is called a “condition.” Because it causes good minds to arise, it is named “perfuming.” Because it gives rise to images of wholesome dharmas, it is compared to a “mirror.” That is, when this greatness of attributes emerges from entanglement, it serves as the mirror-wisdom and can initiate great functions, manifesting myriad transformations. Serving as a condition, it perfumes and stimulates the minds of sentient beings, causing them to generate weariness [with saṃsāra] and joy [in nirvāṇa], and to undertake preparatory practices; this is called “condition-perfuming.” These virtues of practice are the images of the Buddha’s wisdom and are not separate from the Buddha’s wisdom; therefore, it is called a “mirror.” Thus the Buddhabhūmi[sūtraśāstra] says: “The great perfect mirror wisdom can give rise to images of all wholesome dharmas of sentient beings.”
Below, in analyzing the characteristics, the text has two segments.
Saying “relying on the dharma emerging and departing” identifies the essence of the condition-perfuming. From “universally illuminating” onward, it shows the marks of condition-perfuming. That is, relying on the aforementioned dharmakāya that has emerged from entanglement and departed from the marks of integration, because it is pure, clear, and bright, it generates great wisdom. By the meaning and function of its radiance, it can universally illuminate the manifold minds of sentient beings in the Dharma realm. Because it universally illuminates, it manifests myriad transformations in accordance with their thoughts, causing them to cultivate and practice. In accordance with their share of roots of goodness, it therefore says, “causing them to cultivate roots of goodness, manifesting in accordance with their thoughts.”
