Treatise: "Question: If the mind [ceases, how can it continue? If it continues, how can ignorance] be said to cease completely?"
Exposition: Next is resolving doubts. First is the question, followed by the answer. This is the first part. Hearing it said earlier that because objects cease the concordant mind ceases, one assumes that the essence of the concordant mind also ceases, and therefore raises an objection: "If when objects cease the essence of the concordant mind also ceases along with them, since the essence of the mind has ceased, while the three—activity, turning, and manifesting—are not yet due to be exhausted, upon what would they continue? Hence it is said: 'If the mind ceases, how can it continue?' If one says that because the essence of the mind is not completely exhausted it enables the characteristics of ignorance to continue, then since the mind does not cease, those characteristics of ignorance ought to continue perpetually; how then does the path of the antidote say that it ceases completely?"
