[Treatise:] Furthermore, if a person [... this is cultivating insight]. [Exposition:] Above showed the cultivation of calm; below shows the cultivation of insight (vipaśyanā). Within this there are three: first, the intention to cultivate insight; second, discerning the characteristics of insight cultivated; third, concluding the scope of insight. This is the first. If one only cultivates calm, there are four faults: first, the fault of mind sinking, because resting conditions and being one-sidedly quiescent accords with the characteristic of delusion; second, the fault of giving rise to laxity, because resting the mind leads to abandoning other activities; third, not taking delight in savoring, because being quiescent leads to slighting wholesome deeds; fourth, the fault of not giving rise to great compassion, because not contemplating the realm of suffering leads to delighting only in one's own quiescence.
