[Treatise:] Or there may be those who make offerings... and fall back to the level of the two vehicles.
[Exposition:] This explains the power of external conditions, revealing the persons in the intermediate minds of the stage of faith. 'Making offerings to the Buddhas without having passed through ten thousand kalpas' means the time of their practice is not yet complete. 'In the midst of this, encountering conditions, there are also,' and so forth, means the conditions encountered are not superior. Seeing the Buddha's physical form, they do not see the essence. Making offerings to the Saṅgha, they grasp onto the outward appearance. Being taught to generate the aspiration by the two vehicles, it is an inferior encouragement to aspire. Imitating others in generating the aspiration, it lacks self-nature. 'Aspiration such as this,' and so forth, can result in falling back and loss. These four are all not minds of compassion and wisdom; not seeing original nature, their essence is indeterminate. Although all generate the aspiration, some then fall back; these are the latter four minds of the Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā.
