[Treatise:] What are the three?... because of sentient beings' suffering.
[Exposition:] This reveals the characteristics according to what was indicated. The phrase 'straightforward mind' means non-conceptual; it correctly recollects suchness without false thoughts. It is the root of the practice of dual benefit. The phrase 'deep mind' means inclination; because one is inclined to cultivate all wholesome practices, it is the root of the practice of self-benefit. The phrase 'great compassionate mind' means universal salvation; because one universally wishes to save and extricate sentient beings from suffering, it is the root of the practice of benefiting others. These three are the three bodhicittas; through this, they are the characteristics of generating the aspiration.
