[Treatise:] Because this bodhisattva... what they cultivate is free from marks.
[Exposition:] This reveals the superior characteristics. 'Because this bodhisattva,' and so forth, explains the superiority of time. That is, that first kalpa has three periods: the ten dwellings, practices, and dedications occupy the beginning, middle, and end. Now, this generation of aspiration is situated in the latter period; therefore it says 'the first kalpa is about to be fulfilled.' 'Deeply understanding the Dharma of suchness,' and so forth, explains the superiority of understanding, surpassing the preceding stage of correctly recollecting suchness. Being different from the stage of faith, it is called 'deep'; being different from the virtue of direct realization, it is called 'understanding.' Obtaining this depth, it is called 'manifesting before them.' 'What they cultivate is free from marks' reveals the superiority of practice: because of attaining deep understanding of suchness, whatever practice they cultivate is free from marks.
