[Treatise:] What are the two? [First, that which is not yet in accord: ordinary beings, the two vehicles, and newly resolved bodhisattvas perfume through consciousness and the mind, and cultivate practice relying on the power of faith; having not yet attained the non-conceptual mind, they are not yet in accord with the substance of the dharmakāya; having not yet attained the cultivation of autonomous activity, they are] not yet in accord with the activity [of the dharmakāya].
[Commentary:] The explanation below has two parts: first, not yet in accord; second, already in accord. This is the first. The text again has three sections: first, "ordinary beings," and so forth, adduces the persons according to their stages. "Through the mind," and so forth, next differentiates the inferiority of their practice: ordinary beings and the two vehicles perfume through phenomenal consciousness; newly resolved bodhisattvas perfume through the mind. Although it is a consciousness perfumed by tathatā, because it possesses conceptualisation it has not yet tallied with tathatā; hence it says they "cultivate practice relying on the power of faith." "Having not yet attained their own practice" clarifies that they are not yet in accord: because they have not yet realised and attained non-conceptual cognition, have not yet revealed the dharmakāya, and are not yet identical with the Buddha's substance, they are not yet in accord with the substance of the buddhas; because they have not yet realised and attained post-attainment cognition, they have not, like the buddhas, generated the responsive and transformative bodies, and are not yet in accord with the activity of the buddhas. "Autonomous activity" refers to the activity of the faculties. "Cultivating practice" refers to post-attainment cognition. Because post-attainment cognition can generate the transformative activity of the faculties, it is called "the cultivation of autonomous activity."
