[Treatise:] Whether walking, standing, [sitting, or lying down, one should at all times practice calming and contemplation together.]
[Commentary:] The above clarified their separate cultivation. Below clarifies their twin operation. In this there are three [parts]: first, a general indication of practicing them together; next, revealing their active aspects; and finally, a general concluding summary of the twin operation. This is the first. "Standing" means being upright. "Arising" means walking. One should also practice them during all precepts [and postures]. The new translation here also has a textual basis that summarizes the good of this, for that text says: "Furthermore, if one practices contemplation alone, the mind will not be calmed and will generate much doubt, will not accord with the ultimate truth, and will not produce non-conceptual wisdom. Therefore, calming and contemplation should be practiced together."
