[Treatise:] What does this mean? Because these two aspects are not separate from each other. [Commentary:] This explains and establishes it. "What does this mean?": If the two aspects were separate, they could not follow each other; as with the original one mind, it could not yet be that both subsume. How could the two aspects each completely subsume? Therefore, the reply follows: "Because these two aspects are not separate from each other." Because the aspect of tathatā is the principle-essence of the mind, and the aspect of arising and ceasing is the phenomena-marks of the mind. Because principle and phenomena are not separate from each other, raising principle subsumes phenomena, and raising phenomena subsumes principle. Therefore, it is said that the two aspects each completely subsume. (Answer: Raising water is waves; hence waves are water; therefore, the two aspects each completely subsume.)
