The Buddha told Mahāmati, "The ultimate truth (paramārtha) is the realm of the inner personal realization (pratyātmādhigama) of noble wisdom; it is not the cognitive sphere of verbal discrimination. Verbal discrimination cannot reveal it." Mahāmati said, "Preaching is subject to arising and ceasing, fluctuating, and conditionally produced through reciprocal causes and conditions. If it is conditionally produced through reciprocal causes, it cannot reveal the ultimate truth. The ultimate truth has no marks of self or other; speech possesses marks and cannot reveal it. The ultimate truth is mind-only (citta-mātra); various external marks are entirely absent. Verbal discrimination cannot reveal it. Therefore, Mahāmati, you should keep far away from verbal discrimination and conceptualizing the Buddha." The Buddha told the brāhmaṇa, "As long as there is the slightest movement of mental consciousness discriminating external objects, it is all worldly sophistry (lokāyata). Down to the movement of the mind, that is worldly sophistry. One whose discriminations do not arise is a person who sees their own mind."
