The Viśeṣacintibrahma-paripṛcchā-sūtra says: Brahmā asked, "How is it that monks engage in much contention and disputation?" The reply was: "'This is good, this is bad'—this is called contention and disputation. 'This is principle, this is not principle'—this is called contention and disputation. 'This is defiled, this is pure'—this is called contention and disputation. 'This is wholesome, this is unwholesome'—this is called contention and disputation. 'This is moral precept, this is broken precept'—this is called contention and disputation. 'This should be done, this should not be done'—this is called contention and disputation. 'By this dharma the path is attained, by this dharma the fruition is attained'—this is called contention and disputation. Brahmā, if within the Dharma one has a mind of high and low, grasping and greedily clinging, these are all contention and disputation. One who delights in contention and disputation lacks the dharma of a śramaṇa. One who delights in the dharma of a śramaṇa has no false imagination or greedy clinging." Brahmā asked, "How does a monk draw close to the Buddha?" The reply was: "If a monk, among all dharmas, sees no dharma as either near or far, this is called drawing close to the Buddha." Brahmā asked, "How does a monk serve and attend upon the Buddha?" The reply was: "If a monk creates nothing through body, speech, or mind, this is called serving and attending upon the Buddha."
