The Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra states: At that time, Mahāmati said to the Buddha: "World-Honoured One, I pray that you will explain the intrinsic nature of the Buddhas for my sake." The Buddha said: "Mahāmati, awakening to the two kinds of selflessness, eliminating the two kinds of obscurations, transcending the two kinds of deaths, and cutting off the two kinds of afflictions is the intrinsic nature of the Buddhas. Mahāmati, when śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas attain this Dharma, they too are called Buddhas; it is on account of this meaning that I preach only the ekayāna."
